Easy Seafood Gumbo Recipe

A proper gumbo is the kind of one-pot meal that fills the whole kitchen with something rich, complex, and deeply Southern — bold Cajun tomatoes, sweet shrimp, tender crabmeat, and sliced okra simmered together into a thick, savory stew ladled over rice. This easy version captures everything great about classic gumbo without the hours of standing over a roux.

Ingredients

1 pkg Pioneer® Brown Gravy Mix
2 1/2 cup Water
2 cans (14.5oz) Cajun-style stewed tomatoes
2 cup okra, sliced (fresh or frozen)
1 dash hot pepper sauce (to taste)
1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
1/2 pkg medium shrimp, frozen, peeled and deveined
1/2 pkg imitation crabmeat, cut in 1/2-inch pieces
2 cup white rice, cooked

This Easy Seafood Gumbo uses Pioneer Brown Gravy Mix to build the rich, savory base that gives this Cajun-inspired stew its depth of flavor and the thick, satisfying consistency of a long-simmered gumbo.

Instructions

  1. Make the Gravy Base

In large saucepan, heat 2 cups water to boiling. In small bowl, combine Pioneer Brown Gravy Mix with 1/2 cup cold water. Stir gravy mixture into boiling water; cook and stir until slightly thickened.

  2. Add Vegetables and Simmer

Add tomatoes, okra, hot pepper sauce and bay leaf; cover and simmer 20 minutes.

  3. Add Seafood and Cook

Add shrimp and crabmeat; simmer 5 to 6 minutes or until shrimp is cooked. Discard bay leaf.

  4. Serve Over Rice

Place 1/3 cup rice in each soup bowl; ladle gumbo over rice.
