Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken Recipe
Slow-cooker French Onion Chicken is the recipe that makes the whole house smell incredible from lunchtime to dinner. Tender chicken cooked down in a rich, deeply savory onion sauce until it falls apart at the touch of a fork — this is weeknight cooking at its absolute best.

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups water
1 pkg Pioneer® Au Jus Gravy Mix
2 tbsp unsalted butter
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
1 tsp granulated sugar
1 tsp salt, divided
4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish
This Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken uses Pioneer Au Jus Gravy Mix to build the deeply savory, caramelized onion broth that makes this easy dinner taste like it came straight from a restaurant kitchen.
Instructions
- Make the Au Jus Gravy
Combine water and Pioneer Au Jus Gravy Mix in a saucepan and whisk until smooth. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 1 minute until thickened. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Caramelize the Onions
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions, sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until tender and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- Season the Chicken
Season chicken thighs with remaining salt, black pepper and garlic powder. Place them in slow-cooker.
- Slow-Cook the Chicken
Pour gravy over chicken thighs and top with caramelized onions. Cover and cook on low setting for 6-7 hours, or on high for 3-4 hours, until chicken is cooked through and an internal temperature of at least 165°F is reached.
- Melt Cheese and Serve
Five minutes before serving, sprinkle the top evenly with Gruyere cheese, cover and cook until melted. Garnish with parsley and serve.
