Beef and Mushroom Hand Pies Recipe
Savory Beef & Mushroom Hand Pies are the kind of thing you pull from the oven and cannot help but eat one before the rest of the family even sits down. Golden, flaky pastry wrapped around a rich, savory filling of ground beef and mushrooms — they are the perfect portable meal for a picnic, a packed lunch, or a dinner that stands on its own.

Ingredients
2 cups water
1 pkg Pioneer® Brown Gravy Mix
1 tbsp unsalted butter
1/2 cup mushrooms, finely chopped
1/2 lb ground beef
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 pkg puff pastry sheets, thawed
1 large egg, beaten
These Beef and Mushroom Hand Pies get their rich, deeply savory filling from Pioneer Brown Gravy Mix, making these meat hand pies a satisfying, from-scratch meal that is easier to pull off than it looks.
Instructions
- Preheat and Prep Pan
Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
- Make the Brown Gravy
Combine water and Pioneer Brown Gravy Mix in a saucepan and whisk until smooth. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 1 minute until thickened. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Cook the Beef Filling
Melt butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the mushrooms and cook until golden-brown and softened, about 2-3 minutes. Add the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper, and cook, breaking apart into small pieces, until beef is browned, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in gravy.
- Cut and Fill the Pastry
Roll out puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Cut into rounds using a 4-inch round cutter or a sharp knife. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of gravy mixture into the center of one dough round.
- Seal and Vent Hand Pies
Top with a second dough round and use a fork to seal edges. Gently poke ventilation holes on top of the hand pie using a sharp knife. Place onto the prepared baking sheet and brush with egg.
- Bake Until Puffed
Bake until golden-brown and puffed, about 20-25 minutes. Let cool slightly before serving.
