Ingredients
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed
2 cups water
1 pkg Pioneer® Au Jus Gravy Mix
1/2 cup shredded Swiss cheese
1 cup crispy fried onions
Make this French Onion Green Bean Casserole with Pioneer Au Jus Gravy Mix for the deeply savory, from-scratch flavor that turns a simple side dish into the one everyone asks about.
Instructions
- Preheat and Prep Dish
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9×9-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.
- Caramelize Onions and Sauté Beans
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add onions, salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden-brown and caramelized, about 20 minutes. Remove from the skillet and wipe clean. Add green beans and saute for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until crisp-tender.
- Make the Au Jus Gravy
Meanwhile, combine water and Pioneer Au Jus Gravy Mix in a saucepan and whisk until smooth. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 1 minute until thickened. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Combine and Transfer Filling
Pour gravy over green bean mixture. Add cheese and stir to combine. Transfer mixture to the prepared baking dish in an even layer.
- Top and Bake
Top evenly with fried onions and bake until golden-brown and edges are bubbling, about 15-20 minutes. Let cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.
